Did you know that parents have more influence over their child than friends, music, TV, the Internet and celebrities.

Kids who learn a lot about the risks of drugs and alcohol from their parents are 42% less likely to use than those who do not. That is BIG, so parents, don't miss the opportunities to talk to your kids.

Friends, music, TV, the Internet and celebrities still have some influence but also serve as good ways to open up conversations with tweens and teens about drugs and alcohol. They are aware of those in the news having problems related to drug and alcohol use like Lindsay Lohan or Josh Hamilton (past addiction issues). If there is a song that has lyrics that talk about getting high, for instance a recent Kesha song claims that she is like a "love-sick Crack head" that could be a way to ask them if they know what a Crack head is and explain to them the dangers of using crack.

These are just a few examples of how to open dialogue with your child. You can also learn more under "Age appropriate discussions."

Help your teen or tween make the right life choices by:

  • Talking and listening to them regularly

  • Being involved in their everyday world

  • Setting limits and making it clear that you do not want them drinking or using drugs

  • Making sure they are aware of the consequences for their actions and backing up what you say, if something does happen

JUF will provide an at home drug testing kit to parents who request them at no charge, up to two kits per family per year. This allows parents to test children in the privacy of their own homes. If you would like to request a FREE home drug testing kit, please email us at info@donteventryit.org.
